Barbara Quarles STEAM Scholarship

The Griffin Middle School Foundation, in recognition of Barbara Quarles, will award a Cobb County School District graduating high school senior who attended 6th-8th grades at Griffin Middle School and plans to pursue a career in STEAM with a $2,000 scholarship sent directly to their chosen college.

Requirements

  • Any graduating high school senior from Cobb County School District enrolling in a full-time course study in a STEAM field at any 2 or 4 year accredited institution of higher learning
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Funds must be used for tuition only (Foundation will forward to institution)
  • Applicant must have attended 6th-8th grades at Griffin Middle School

All application materials must be submitted electronically. When preparing essays and other supporting documents, applicants are encouraged to choose standard fonts and send in PDF format (jpg/png will not be accepted.) Applicants who do not adhere to the outlined specifications will be disqualified.

  • What do you hope to be doing 5-7 years from now?
  • How will you use your formal education to help your community?

The Essay
Prompt:
Ms. Quarles was famous at Griffin for declaring she was "living the dream." What does "living the dream" mean to you and why? How are you pursuing this or plan to pursue this?
The committee members will be especially interested in these points:
  • An explanation of the role specific values have in your decision making
  • How your values reflect your characters
  • Your approach to achieving "the dream"
Requirements:
The essay is limited to no more than 1,000 words, 2 double-spaced pages (approximately 6,000 characters.) Carefully proof your essay and know that well-done, concise essays are admired.
